For the month of March, the focus for the show at the SPACe gallery was “For the Birds”. Since winter was still upon us here in Colorful (and often white) Colorado, my thoughts turned to tropical paradise for subject matter.
Hello Parrot looks out at me through the open door of his ornate cage, and beckons me to pass through that door to join him among the palms and ferns.
This piece is made from many layers of white paper, cut out with the laser and stacked upon each other for a 3-dimensional effect. Each layer has an element of the bird cage, and the surrounding swirls, as well as a piece of the parrot and his world. The paper was white, so each layer needed to be hand-painted with water color to represent its contribution to the stack.
You are witnessing my first attempt to paint with watercolor. Not once in my life have I ever tried this, and it turned out to be a lot of fun. The bird and the leaves were a real hoot to do, and I was happy with the result.
There is a link below the picture for some close-ups of how it came out. Cool beans!
